Foam Mats & Interlocking Foam Floor Tiles
Sprung Gym Flooring's foam mats are interlocking EVA tiles, 13–40mm thick, that turn any hard floor into a warm, cushioned surface in minutes. They're the right choice for home workouts, kids' rooms, playrooms and studios — light enough to lift with one hand, firm enough to train on, and fitted without glue, tools or a tradesman.
Which foam mat thickness do I need?
Sprung's foam tiles come in three thicknesses, and the floor's job picks between them. 13mm handles light duty — children's play corners and comfort underfoot. 20mm is the all-rounder for most rooms: enough cushioning for bodyweight training, yoga and play, without doors catching or furniture wobbling.
Choose 40mm where falls matter more than furniture — martial arts practice, gymnastics, toddler zones — because the extra depth absorbs harder landings. Between two options, go 20mm for mixed-use rooms and 40mm for dedicated mat space.
Are foam mats right for a gym — or do I need rubber?
Sprung sells both, so here's the honest answer. Foam mats suit bodyweight training, stretching, yoga, HIIT and anywhere comfort and warmth matter. They are the wrong choice under heavy weights: dumbbells and loaded bars will dent EVA foam permanently. If your room involves a rack, a bench or anything above 20kg hitting the floor, you want rubber gym mats or interlocking rubber tiles instead — and plenty of customers run both, foam for the stretching zone, rubber under the iron.
Are foam mats safe for babies and children?
Yes — Sprung's EVA foam tiles are certified non-toxic and free of formamide and phthalates, which is what matters for crawling-age children. The interlocked surface stays flat with no gaps for small fingers, wipes clean with soapy water, and takes felt-tip pen better than your carpet does.
For dedicated children's spaces, the kids play mats range adds colours and softer densities, and our playground flooring covers outdoor play areas and school projects.
How do interlocking foam tiles fit together?
Like a jigsaw: each Sprung foam tile has puzzle edges that press together by hand, and every pack includes straight edging strips for a clean border. A typical spare room takes 20–30 minutes. Tiles cut cleanly with a sharp knife and a straight edge for radiators, alcoves and awkward corners — and because nothing is glued, the whole floor lifts and moves house with you.
Do foam mats smell?
New EVA foam has a mild odour on unboxing that fades within a day or two aired out — noticeably milder than recycled rubber. If a scent-free room from day one matters, unbox the tiles a day before fitting.
FAQs
How thick should foam mats be for a home gym? 13mm is light-duty cushioning; 20mm suits general home training; 40mm is for martial arts, gymnastics and anywhere falls are part of the activity. Under actual weights, use rubber instead — foam dents.
Can you put gym equipment on foam mats? Light equipment yes — bikes and rowers with load-spreading feet are fine. Racks, benches and free weights, no: they compress EVA permanently. Use rubber gym flooring under iron.
How do you clean foam mats? Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, a mop or cloth. They're closed-cell, so spills sit on the surface rather than soaking in. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which dull the texture.
Are foam or rubber mats better? Foam is lighter, warmer, cheaper and more comfortable; rubber is heavier, tougher and takes weights. Comfort rooms take foam, iron rooms take rubber — our rubber vs foam vs vinyl guide walks through it in full.
