The right playroom flooring helps create a space where children can move, explore and play more comfortably. Whether you are furnishing a playroom at home, developing a nursery activity area or upgrading flooring in a kindergarten, classroom or daycare setting, the surface needs to balance cushioning, durability, hygiene and practical everyday maintenance.

Our playroom flooring range includes soft EVA foam mats, hard-wearing rubber tiles and artificial grass surfaces for indoor and outdoor play areas. Each option offers different levels of cushioning, support and weather resistance, allowing you to select flooring that suits the age of the children, the type of play equipment and the way the space will be used.

Unlike a loose rug or thin carpet, purpose-designed play matting provides a more stable and protective surface beneath crawling, sitting, building games and active play. Interlocking formats are also simple to install and can be adapted around furniture, storage units and unusually shaped rooms.

Choosing Flooring for a Children’s Play Area

Before choosing a floor, consider how active the play area will be and whether the surface is intended for permanent or occasional use.

For babies, toddlers and younger children who spend more time sitting, crawling or playing at floor level, a soft foam surface is usually the most comfortable option. Older children, busy nurseries and shared activity rooms may benefit from the additional stability and wear resistance of rubber flooring.

Other points to consider include:

  • Whether the flooring will be used indoors or outside
  • The amount of cushioning required
  • The height and type of play equipment
  • How frequently the area will need to be cleaned
  • Whether chairs, tables or storage units will sit on the floor
  • The condition of the existing subfloor
  • Whether the flooring may need to be removed or rearranged later

Flooring cannot prevent every accident, and the correct product should always be selected according to the equipment manufacturer’s guidance and any relevant safety requirements. However, a suitable cushioned surface can make a play space more comfortable and help reduce the severity of everyday bumps and tumbles.

Foam Playroom Flooring

Foam is a practical choice for indoor playrooms, reading corners, sensory areas and temporary activity zones. Its softer feel makes it particularly suitable for younger children who regularly sit, kneel, crawl or lie on the floor.

Our foam mats use an interlocking puzzle design, allowing the tiles to be fitted without specialist tools or adhesives. Individual pieces connect to form a continuous surface and can be lifted again when the room needs to be returned to its original use.

The textured finish provides more grip than a smooth household floor, while the closed-cell EVA construction does not readily absorb everyday spills. This makes the surface straightforward to wipe clean after snacks, crafts or messy play.

Bright colour options can be used to create a cheerful full-room floor, define a dedicated play corner or divide a larger space into separate activity zones. Reversible mats provide additional layout flexibility, particularly in nurseries, classrooms and multipurpose rooms where the appearance of the space may change over time.

Foam flooring is lightweight and comfortable, but it is not intended for every application. Heavy furniture, narrow chair legs or equipment with concentrated pressure points can leave lasting indentations. Protective furniture pads should therefore be considered where tables, shelves or storage units will remain in position.

Rubber Playroom Flooring

Rubber flooring provides a firmer and more durable alternative for high-use play spaces. It is particularly useful in busy classrooms, nurseries, daycare facilities and activity areas where the surface must cope with frequent foot traffic, movable furniture and regular cleaning.

The natural resilience of rubber creates a supportive surface without feeling excessively soft underfoot. It can accommodate play tables, storage units and larger freestanding equipment more effectively than lightweight foam, making it suitable for spaces used by a wider range of ages.

Our rubber playroom tiles are water resistant and can generally be swept, vacuumed or lightly mopped as part of routine maintenance. Their weight helps them remain stable in use, while modular formats allow damaged sections to be replaced without necessarily lifting the entire floor.

Rubber may also be preferable where noise is a concern. Its dense construction can help soften the sound of footsteps, toys and movable equipment, although the final level of sound reduction will depend on the thickness of the flooring, the subfloor and the construction of the room.

For larger shared spaces, rubber floor tiles can provide a long-lasting surface that feels more substantial than temporary foam matting while still offering greater cushioning than concrete, laminate or ceramic tiles.

What Thickness Is Best for Playroom Flooring?

The most suitable thickness depends on the age of the children and the activities taking place.

A 13mm foam mat can work well for general floor play, reading areas and temporary play corners. A 20mm foam mat provides a deeper cushioned feel and may be more appropriate for toddlers, active indoor play or spaces where children spend extended periods on the floor. Alternatively, 40mm tatami mats are a great choice and offer even greater protection.

For outdoor areas or beneath larger play equipment, thicker rubber safety tiles are normally more suitable. Options of approximately 30mm to 40mm provide greater impact absorption than less dense indoor mats, but the required thickness must be matched to the equipment and its potential fall height.

A thicker floor is not automatically the right floor. The density, material, installation method and supporting base all affect performance. Outdoor playground installations should therefore be planned around the complete system rather than choosing tiles solely by their stated thickness.

Synthetic Grass Playroom Flooring

Artificial grass can bring the appearance of an outdoor lawn into indoor playrooms, sensory spaces and themed activity areas. It can also be used outside where natural grass becomes muddy, uneven or difficult to maintain.

A grass-style surface works particularly well when creating imaginative play zones, indoor garden themes or a softer-looking area beside rubber flooring. Different materials can be combined to distinguish quiet play, active movement and equipment zones without relying on permanent walls or barriers.

Our artificial playground grass is available in several colours, allowing the floor to form part of the overall design. Green creates a familiar lawn effect, while brighter colours can be used for pathways, games or individual activity sections.

Artificial grass should be laid over a suitable, stable base. For outdoor use, drainage and ground preparation are particularly important, as the surface underneath must allow water to disperse rather than collect beneath the flooring.

Outdoor Playroom Flooring and Playground Surfaces

Outdoor play areas face different demands from indoor playrooms. The flooring must cope with rain, changing temperatures, dirt and more intensive wear while continuing to provide a stable surface.

Our outdoor playground safety mats are designed for garden play zones, nurseries, schools and other supervised recreational spaces. The rubber construction with integrated drainage is durable, slip resistant and better suited to changing weather conditions than indoor EVA foam.

Outdoor rubber tiles can be installed over an appropriate firm base to create a more consistent surface around playhouses, climbing equipment, activity tables and seating areas. Their modular design also makes it easier to repair or extend the play zone later.

Before installation, check the condition and gradient of the base, the drainage requirements and the critical fall-height specification of any play equipment.

Installation and Everyday Maintenance

Interlocking foam mats are among the simplest playroom floors to install. Begin with a clean, dry and level subfloor, connect the tiles in rows and trim the perimeter only where necessary. Leaving the installation loose can make it easier to lift, clean or rearrange the surface later.

Rubber tiles are heavier and may require more careful cutting, particularly around walls, doorways and fixed furniture. Outdoor installations also need a properly prepared base and effective drainage.

Most playroom flooring can be maintained through regular vacuuming or sweeping followed by light cleaning with a diluted, material-compatible detergent. Spills should be dealt with promptly, and excessive water should be avoided around tile joints.

A well-chosen floor makes a children’s play area easier to use, easier to maintain and more comfortable for everyday activity. By matching the material and thickness to the setting, you can create a practical play surface for homes, classrooms, nurseries and outdoor spaces.
