Know Your Gym Floor: What Thickness Do I Need?

The short answer: for most home and garage gyms lifting free weights over concrete, 20mm rubber tiles are the right choice. Go 15mm for cardio and fixed machines, 30mm for heavy dropped weights or rooms above other rooms, and 43mm for dedicated lifting platforms and drop zones. Every thickness is available as a free sample.

15mm — cardio and machines

The lightest-duty rubber tile in the range.

  • Home: spare-room setups — bikes, rowers, treadmills, yoga and stretching, dumbbells up to around 20kg.
  • Garage: fine under machines and racks that stay put; not for dropped free weights.
  • Commercial: cardio zones, fixed resistance machines and stretch areas.

20mm — the free-weights standard

Our best seller, and the default answer for most gyms.

  • Home: the one to buy for a proper home gym — racks, barbells and dumbbells over concrete or a solid floor.
  • Garage: the garage-gym standard — protects concrete from dropped weights and takes daily training.
  • Commercial: free-weight and functional training zones.

30mm — heavy drops and noise control

Step up when the weights get serious or the room is above someone.

  • Home: heavy lifters, and rooms where the thud travels — upstairs rooms, flats and terraces.
  • Garage: heavy barbell work and repeated drops.
  • Commercial: dedicated lifting areas, boutique studios above other tenants, CrossFit-style boxes.

43mm — platforms and drop zones

Maximum impact absorption for the hardest-working part of the floor.

  • Home: rarely needed wall to wall — a deadlift corner if you pull heavy.
  • Garage: deadlift and Olympic-lifting zones.
  • Commercial: Olympic platforms, drop zones and upper-floor gyms that need the most impact absorption available.
