Rubber Flooring V Foam Flooring - What is the best choice for Me?

Is Foam or Rubber Gym Flooring better?

When deciding on the right flooring for your gym, you’ll want to choose something that is safe and comfortable for workouts while also providing durability, affordability, and is extremely low-maintenance. This often comes down to rubber and foam which tick all the boxes in this criteria.

Rubber flooring is the most popular gym flooring option for the majority of fitness uses within the industry due to its versatility, various thickness options and its overall durability. Similarly, foam flooring also has these qualities but not to the same extent and in a slightly different way.

In this article we will look at the these 2 types of gym flooring in more detail and look at the best uses of each.

Table of Contents

Rubber Gym Flooring

Rubber is often used in gyms due to its various sizes and thicknesses. These components are perfect for both low-impact and high-impact activities, including HIIT, weight training, and heavy equipment workouts.

 RUBBER GYM FLOORING

Advantages of Rubber Gym Flooring

  • Durability - Rubber flooring is very strong and durable. It can withstand high traffic, high-intensity workouts, heavy exercise machinery and it will last for an extended period of time without wear or damage. Its durability gives the perfect balance between strength, compression, and comfort.
  • Shock Absorption - Rubber is highly protective and provides excellent shock absorbtion when performing high impact gym activities. It prevents users from injury while shielding underflooring from damage. Another fantastic benefit is the sound-reducing qualities of rubber flooring.
  • Easy Installation - Rubber mats are a bit heavier than foam mats, yet they are still very fast and easy to install DIY without a specialist fitter. Their versatility and design make them simple to install in any gym space. Tiles can be butted together without glue using a compression method (please see Gym Flooring Installation Guidelines here).
  • Outdoor Options - Rubber is water resistant. Rubber tiles with feet or drainage channels can be used outdoors.
  • Simple Maintenance - Fluid-resistant rubber makes these mats easy to clean and care for. Sweat, spills, and other fluids can simply be wiped up without the worry of mould and smells. Caring for rubber mats often involves just sweeping or vacuuming dust and debris as well as wiping fluids with a neutral cleaner.
  • Eco-Friendly - Most rubber mats are made from recycled rubber, often from old tires. This makes them a very environmentally-friendly option for flooring.

Disadvantages of Rubber Gym Flooring

While there are many reasons to use rubber mats for your gym floors, there are some disadvantages that cause people to choose foam instead. Take a look at the potential downside of rubber:

  • Cost - The initial costs of rubber matting tends to be higher than the initial cost of foam. You’ll be making a larger upfront investment by choosing rubber.
  • Less Soft - Rubber flooring although available in smooth surface designs is not as soft to the surface. For some activities such as Martial Arts where

Types of Rubber Flooring

There are a few different rubber flooring options for gyms:-

Rubber Tiles - The most common type, tile format comes in various sizes, shapes and thicknesses to suit different uses. The good thing about rubber is that it is easily cut to size making it simple to install for most people.

RUBBER GYM TILES
Rubber Rolls - Rolls are widely used in larger, open-plan spaces such as Spin Studios or Fitness Rooms as it is cost-effective to use with less waste. Rubber rolls tend to come in different thicknesses but are not usually available in very thick options.

RUBBER FYM FLOORING ROLLS
Puzzle Tiles - These are interconnecting tiles with a jigsaw profile which slot together. Puzzle Tiles are a great option for DIY installers. There is also interlocking tiles which differ from Puzzle tiles. These interlocking rubber tiles connect using hidden inserts which lock the tiles together for extra stability.

PUZZLE TILES
Poured Rubber - This rubber floor solution is mainly used for outdoor sports venues and play spaces where the area is extensive. Rubber is poured and dried similar to how a concrete surface is created. Very costly and time consuming, poured rubber is not the best option for indoor sports and gym facilities due to more cost efficient options being available to hand.

Foam Gym Flooring

Foam flooring is another widely used choice for fitness and sports. It is naturally anti-fatigue, resilient and cushions impact from high intensity movements and fitness workouts. It is particularly popular in disciplines such as MMA, Martial Arts and Boxing because these types of training rely on superior cushioning and grip while being soft to the body and joints such as knees, hands and feet.

In fitness, foam is best used for activities with lighter weights and gym equipment as heavier free weights or machines may not be supported as well as with rubber flooring and foam mats can become damaged easier. It is the most suited for activities such as Pilates, Yoga, lighter weight training, bodyweight and workout classes, Martial Arts, Boxing and Gymnastics.

Like rubber flooring, the suitability of a foam mat to the intended use usually comes down to the thickness. Very thin, lightweight foam flooring will provide good support to a degree. Thicker options in 20mm and 40mm work best for higher impact workouts and activities.

 EVA FOAM mATS

Advantages of Foam Gym Flooring

  • Easy Installation - In puzzle tile format, you only need to remove the tiles from their packaging and connect them by the interlocking edges.
  • Simple Maintenance - Cleaning foam mats is just as easy as cleaning rubber mats. Similar to rubber mats, they are waterproof so spills and fluids can easily be wiped off. They can be cleaned regularly using a mild solution.
  • Impact Absorbent - Foam floors are used for sports such as gymnastics, martial arts, and boxing. These types of sports need flooring that absorbs impact well to provide comfort, support, and protection for the participant. Foam mats contain small pockets of air that make them flexible and able to carry the weight of users and equipment.
  • Soft Surface - For sports which require a soft surface, foam mats are the best choice. They prevent friction burn from consistent contact with the surface as they have a very soft top layer.

Disadvantages of Foam Gym Flooring

Foam mats are a great option for gyms that are typically used for certain sports. However, there are some disadvantages that you’ll want to consider when deciding on the type of floor for your gym.

  • Less Durability - Foam mats are less durable than rubber mats. In a regular gym with weight training, heavy equipment, and high-intensity training, foam mats won’t last as long as rubber.

  • Less Protection - For regular workouts, foam mats provide less protection for athletes, subfloors, and equipment. Too much intensity can cause damage to the mats.

Types of Foam Flooring

Foam flooring is available in different styles:-

Foam Tiles - Foam tiles come in a variety of designs and thicknesses and are used in Boxing Gyms, Martial Arts Studios and Gymnastic Centres. They are installed together permanently or are sometimes laid loose.

Roll-Out Foam Mats - Many Gymnastic Studios and some dance facilities use foam roll-out mats which allow

for easy mobility and provide long, wide surfaces for specific moves.

Puzzle Foam Tiles - Shaped like a puzzle to the edges, these interlocking tiles are commonly used in MMA and children’s play spaces. The easy design means the tiles can be joined and glued together permanently or laid loose for mobile use.

Foam Crash Mats - These are specialized mats used for tumbling, gymnastics, and parkour.

Conclusion

Both rubber and foam mats are popular types of flooring for gyms. They both have many advantages that make them a good choice, depending on your needs. Many sports facilities will opt for a combination of the two types of surfaces to use for different activities.

Rubber mats are best for traditional gyms where HIIT, heavy equipment training, and weight lifting take place. They are strong, durable, and provide the protection and comfort needed for workouts.

Foam mats are the right choice for gyms where martial arts, boxing, and gymnastics are the norm. They offer superior cushioning, impact absorption, and are soft to the body and joints. Foam mats are also suitable for fitness classes and home gyms with lighter weights and activities.

Benefits of Foam Flooring for Gaming & Play Rooms

Benefits of Foam Flooring for Gaming & Play Rooms

If you’re looking for a fun and functional flooring option for your kid’s nursery or playroom, look no further. EVA Tiles are the ideal solution for anyone with kids. Plus they come in several options, so you can find one that suits your exact needs.

Each tile is dual-toned and reversible, so you can flip it over to change the colour. They are available in a gray/black version, if you’re looking for something that will blend in, or red/blue if you want to add some colour to the room.

They also come in two different thicknesses. There is a 20mm, as well as a 40 mm option if you’d like something thicker. Plus there are bulk discounts, so the more tiles that you buy, the cheaper each individual tile will be.

There are tons of benefits to installing this type of flooring, especially for kids’ rooms. Here are just a few of the advantages of EVA tiles:

They Provide Extra Safety

Kids tend to tumble and trip a lot, especially during playtime. That’s why EVA Tiles can be such a great addition to any playroom. They’ll cushion the landing if the children fall down, which can help prevent injury. Plus, they’re non-slip, which means they’ll help prevent accidents from occurring in the first place. Not to mention that these tiles are so soft, that if they stumble, instead of crying, your kids will go right back to playing without missing a beat.

Kids playing with foam mat

Foam Flooring Is More Comfortable Than The Floor

Standing or kneeling on hardwood or traditional tile flooring can be hard on your body. EVA Tiles are soft and kind to the feet and knees and they won’t cause crawling kids to experience friction burn. This means everything from martial arts practice to playtime can go on longer without being interrupted. These tiles help ensure that there are fewer limits on fun.

Foam Mats Are Easy To Clean

Kids are amazing in many ways, including being amazing at making messes. Carpets and rugs simply can’t stand up to the average toddler. Paint, juice, and anything else that can cause a stain will be spilled right away, which leaves ugly discolorations that can be really hard, if not impossible, to remove. EVA Tiles, on the other hand, are easy to keep sparking clean since they won’t absorb liquid. You’ll just need to wipe them down occasionally, and you’ll be good to go!

They Add Some Colour To The Room

EVA Tiles are available to purchase in bright colours. They come in both red and blue, which makes them a perfect addition to any nursery or playroom since they add a fun flair to the decor that kids are sure to love. Plus, they are reversible, so you can switch up the colour scheme later on if you want.

Play area with EVA tiles

Play Matting is Easy To Install

EVA Tiles come in a jigsaw shape, which means they will fit right in with any kid’s room. However, this offers more than just aesthetics. It also means that they are very convenient to put down and require no special skills to install. You can simply pop them in place! This is also great because it allows them to be relocated or removed temporarily as needed.

Jigsaw mat Eva Tiles

They Are Super Durable

Kids are tough on just about everything, so it can be challenging to find flooring solutions that won’t get scuffed or roughed up during activities and playtime. Fortunately, EVA Tiles are very resistant to wear and tear. They’ll even stand up to repetitive movement, so if the kids are practicing a martial arts formation or a dance routine, they won’t get worn out.

They Can Offer Protection To Your Existing Flooring

Certain types of floors, like hardwood flooring, can add a lot of value to your home. However, they can also be vulnerable when active kids are playing on top of them. EVA Tiles are a great solution. They can cover up your floor without causing any damage, so you're able to keep your hardwood in pristine shape.

Foam Matting Reduces Sound

Children can get pretty loud, but EVA Tiles can help soften the noise. These tiles have insulation properties, which means that they will help muffle any sound. So even if your playroom is on an upper level, you’ll be less likely to hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet running around when you’re below them.

They Can Act As A Great Insulator

EVA Tiles can also help insulate against more than just noise. They’re great for the cold too. So if your home gets chilly in the winter, they’ll help keep your children’s tiny feet warm. No need to crank the heat with EVA Tiles installed!

As you can see, there are tons of reasons to install EVA Tiles in your kids’ room. If you’d like to learn more, please visit this link.

Smart Gym Equipment - Our 3 Favourites

Smart Gym Equipment - Our 3 Favourites

In this article, we discuss smart gym equipment, its benefits, and our 3 favourite choices.

Unless you have sequestered in a cave on a deserted island, you know about smart gym equipment. These pieces of machinery are enhanced with technology to provide a motivational, interactive workout. Increasingly, people are making smart gym equipment staples in their homes, too. If you are considering complementing your home gym with smart equipment, this article is a good start. We explain what smart gym equipment is and the selection types. The blog reviews the benefits and outlines our three favourite choices. We start by defining smart gym equipment.

WHAT IS SMART GYM EQUIPMENT?

It is equipment that uses technology to track and enhance workouts. It connects to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and personal devices. Any workout equipment connected to the internet is smart gym equipment. A large display screen guides workouts via compatible apps. Users access live and on-demand workout classes, tailored training, and more. Traditional workout information still tracks. Stats like reps and sets are logged to make it easy to pick up the next session where you left off.

Smart gym equipment is growing in popularity because it provides one-on-one motivation in the privacy of your home. Enthusiasts use the equipment paired with apps to maintain proper form. Fitness goals are set within the apps. The technology steps in and tracks goals automatically. It is much easier to build upon fitness success when a built-in personal trainer takes care of all the details. Users glean health and fitness metrics such as total calories burned, heart rate, distance, and goals accomplished.

Smart gym equipment has three main workout features: virtual, streaming, and subscription.

Virtual

Imagine workouts simulating a real-world experience. Automatic manipulations to incline, speed, and resistance combined with realistic screen displays give the user an immersive experience. Participants can opt for celebrity-led classes to spice up their adventures.

Streaming

The user downloads workouts. Flexibility allows for different themes, instructors, and backgrounds. Users still feel connected to others in a smart workout by enabling features like leaderboards. For some, this competitive spirit boosts their performance.

App Subscriptions

These are a must-have if the user expects streaming workouts. Some mistakenly purchase smart gym equipment without a subscription. Choose the best app with features that appeal to you. Otherwise, the smart gym equipment is just, well, gym equipment.

WHAT TYPES OF MACHINES HAVE SMART FEATURES?

Smart gym equipment is growing in popularity and functionality. Technology constantly adds features that add to a workout. Here is some of the most popular equipment outfitted with smart technology.

Smart Treadmill

Treadmills used to be the backup plan for a cardio workout. Most users rely on their old treadmills when inclement weather makes it impossible to run outdoors. Others use a treadmill because they need a safe environment. Most users agree on one thing. Running on a treadmill is a mind-numbing and monotonous exercise. This thought explains why most treadmills also double as laundry holders!

The smart treadmill experience could not be any different. It opens the world to you right in front of your sneakers. Virtual reality sets your running paths in some of the most beautiful locations around the world. Instructors guide participants along mountain routes that most will never see in person. The display screen coordinates with the appropriate incline and speed to give the illusion of really being there. These provide a great cardio workout.

Smart Stationary Bikes

Not everyone can jump on their bike and take a 2-hour ride in the countryside. Smart bikes today have improved dramatically from the stationary bikes of yesterday. Most provide a quieter performance. 22" smart screens are the standard for most displays. These give high-definition views of popular routes around the globe. A few models use a rotating screen feature when you want to mix up biking with mat work.

Different models encourage staying in sequence to beat or music. Others tilt and lean as you encounter turns to simulate an actual riding experience. Before purchasing a smart stationary bike, you need an app subscription and cycling shoes to maximize your cardio workout.

Smart Rowers

Most workout enthusiasts land on rowers for their unique cardio techniques. Users achieve a total body cardio workout. And unlike running, a rower has no shock impact on the knees or other joints. Rowing engages the core, arms, and legs. Smart rowers kick up the experience tenfold. Streaming workouts are capable of automatically adjusting resistance. Some rowers add the sound of water splashing each time the row raises or lowers. Owners can even get training and critiques on their techniques with selected apps.

Smart Stair Steppers & Cross-Trainers

The compact footprint of stair-steppers and cross-trainers makes them an appealing fit for a home gym. These machines benefit the core, arms, and legs. The realism has not quite caught on with these machines, though. Stair-stepping to the top of The Shard does not hold much appeal for a morning workout.

Smart Fitness Mirrors

These high-tech mirrors are less a piece of equipment as they are a connection to an interactive class. They provide real-time feedback on proper form and other options. The attraction lies in the ability to access different types of workouts. At any time, a user can select from pilates, strength training, yoga, or even boot camp-style workouts.

Smart Boxing

Special gloves with installed trackers are used for smart boxing. Standard boxing or kickboxing is available. Workouts display via an app on a TV screen or a tablet.

WHAT BENEFITS DOES SMART GYM EQUIPMENT PROVIDE?

Smart gym equipment provides the same benefits as a gym workout with added features and convenience.

Accountability

Peer pressure is decidedly motivating for most people. Posting workout results on social media puts more skin in the game. Congratulations upon reaching a goal is a great encouragement to set more.

Motivation

Sticking to a workout routine is tough. Especially when a tough day at work makes social interaction a chore. Then add in the smells, germs, and grunts from a typical gym, and willpower will find the next exit. Working out at home on smart equipment gives you all the benefits of a gym workout without the drawbacks. It removes the roadblocks to sustained motivation.

Stick To Your Schedule

It is much more convenient to leave the car in the garage and jump on your machine whenever you choose. Smart equipment has functions to set up your workouts to your schedule and data tracking. Some even connect to a smartwatch or phone for reminders and updates.

Tailored Workouts

Not everyone has the time or the money to hire a personal trainer. Plus, using a trainer means you adapt your schedule to the schedule of another. Smart gym equipment provides options for custom workouts and fitness goals on your terms. Online plans customize to personal weight, strength, and overall fitness targets. Users have access to virtual classes where they can interact with trainers and participants

Data Tracking

The lack of substantial results leads many to drop their gym memberships. Few of us are disciplined enough or have the resources to track the components of our workout sessions. Smart equipment does that for you. It logs reps and sets but then takes a quantum leap in stat collection. Total physiological data is captured and compared against your progress and goals. Now you can see progress and specific areas to improve.

Saves Money

You may get sticker shock when you start shopping for smart gym equipment. But consider your monthly membership dues with transportation costs for a few years. You will see that smart equipment pays for itself over time.

Foam Matting for Gym Flooring

Foam Matting for Gym Flooring

Foam flooring has become a popular option for gym flooring in recent years. There are several reasons for this. First, foam flooring is much softer than the hardwood or concrete that is typically found in gyms. This makes it much more comfortable to work out on, especially for activities like yoga or Pilates. Second, foam flooring is much easier to clean than other types of flooring and is very simple to install.

EVA Foam Tiles

EVA foam tiles are a popular flooring option for MMA, boxing, yoga, light fitness, and kids play. They are easy to install, durable, and have a variety of colors and patterns to choose from. EVA foam tiles are also relatively inexpensive, making them a great choice for budget-conscious consumers. These foam tiles are usually puzzle shaped and are often reversible. They are made of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and are used as flooring for exercise rooms and play areas. They are soft and have a cushioning effect, which makes them comfortable to walk on. They are also easy to clean and maintain.

There are many surface options for EVA foam tiles, including cross-hatch tatami and smooth. Each option has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it's important to choose the right one for your needs. Cross-hatch tatami is a specialist choice for Martial Arts because it provides a good grip and is slip-resistant. Smooth surfaces are also popular because they're easy to clean and maintain.

EVA foam tiles are available in a variety of thicknesses, including 20mm and 40mm. These tiles are a versatile flooring option with many uses.

Foam Mats with PU coating

Foam mats with PU coating are becoming more and more popular. These mats come in various shapes and colors. They are used for MMA, Boxing, Gymnastics, Parkour, Cheerleading, and other sports. They are made of high quality foam and are very durable.

The PU coating makes the mat slip resistant and easy to clean. Foam mats with PU coating are much more durable than regular foam mats. This is because the PU coating protects the foam from damage and wear.

You can just wipe them down with a damp cloth or vacuum them regularly to keep them looking like new. Foam mats with PU coating are easy to clean and maintain. Plus, they're durable and resist wear and tear, so you won't have to replace them as often as you might other types of flooring.

Foam mats with PU coating are a popular choice for flooring because they provide good traction and slip resistance. The PU coating helps to protect the foam from wear and tear, and the mats can be easily cleaned with a vacuum or mop. Foam mats are also relatively inexpensive, making them a great option for budget-conscious shoppers.

The PU coating provides a cushioned feel that helps to absorb impact and distribute weight evenly, which can help to prevent aches and pains in the feet, legs, and back. Foam mats with PU coating are not only comfortable to walk on, but they can also help reduce fatigue while standing for long periods of time. In addition, the PU coating is slip-resistant, which helps to keep you safe on your feet.

This type of foam mat is widely used in Gymnastics and for kids tumbling and play.

Combat Mats

Most combat mats are used in competitive MMA and boxing training. These sports require a lot of movement and require a strong mat. The mats used in these sports are typically made from thick foam and are designed to absorb impact. They are sometimes covered with a vinyl or canvas material.

Mats used for boxing training are typically smaller than those used in MMA. This is because they need to be able to be moved around easily and they also need to be able to fit inside a boxing ring. Boxing mats are usually made from softer materials so that boxers can practice their punches without injuring themselves.

Contest MMA Mat

Gymnastic Mats

Gymnastics mats are usually the largest type of specialty mat. They need to be large enough for gymnasts to perform their routines on and they also need to be able to absorb a lot of impact.

Advantages of Foam Flooring for Specialist Gyms

Foam matting is a popular choice for MMA studios and boxing gyms because it has many advantages. It is slip resistant, which makes it ideal for areas of training. It is also very durable, so it can withstand heavy usage. Foam flooring is also easy to clean and maintain, which is important in a gym setting. Another benefit is that foam flooring has a soft surface which reduces friction burn when grappling or performing floor work.

How to Install Foam Flooring in a gym

Foam tiles are simple to install. They usually come in a jigsaw design allowing the tiles to slot together easily. These can then be secured with adhesive.  Other types are butted together or loose laid for portability.

Maintenance of Foam Matting in a Gym

Gym owners are always looking for ways to cut costs and one area they may overlook is the maintenance of their foam flooring. Although it may seem like a small expense, the cost of maintaining gym mats can add up over time.

There are a few simple things that gym owners can do to keep their foam flooring in good condition and save money in the long run.

Vacuuming regularly is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your foam flooring. This simple task will help remove any dirt or debris that could damage the material. Make sure to vacuum in both directions – along and across the grain of the foam – to pick up all the particles. Be gentle when vacuuming, as too much pressure could also damage the flooring. In addition to regular vacuuming, you should also sweep or dry mop the floor on a weekly basis. This will help to keep it looking its best and prevent any build-up of dirt or debris.

When it comes to cleaning your foam flooring, another important tip is to use a mild soap. This is to prevent any damage that could be caused by using harsh chemicals. Foam flooring is a delicate material, and harsh chemicals can cause significant damage. By using a mild soap, you’ll be able to clean your foam flooring without damaging it.
