Both methods start with careful planning, accurate measurements and a straight reference line. Both use a half-brick pattern to stagger the joins between tiles.

The difference comes in how the finished floor is secured.

For the compression method, the perimeter tiles are deliberately cut slightly oversized and the floor is shunted into position, creating compression across the surface without adhesive.

For larger commercial installations, selected rows and edge pieces can be permanently bonded to the subfloor using an appropriate adhesive. The loose tiles between fixed rows are then compressed into position.

Before You Start: Plan Your Installation

Whichever installation method you choose, don't start by putting the first tile against the wall.

Walls aren't necessarily perfectly straight or square, particularly in garages and other spaces that weren't designed specifically for gym flooring.

Instead, establish a reliable straight reference line and build your installation from that.

You should also measure the complete area before ordering your flooring.

Allow 5% extra for cuts and waste, then round your requirement up to whole tiles.

Think about doorways, structural posts, corners and other obstacles before you begin. Planning these details in advance will make the installation considerably easier.

Prepare the floor properly

Do not rush this part.

Rubber tiles are only as good as the surface underneath them. Before you start laying, the floor should be clean, dry and flat.

Sweep and clean the surface thoroughly, removing dust, grit, dirt and anything else that could sit underneath the tiles.

Check the floor for obvious high spots or areas that could prevent the tiles from sitting flat. You want the tiles to have a stable surface underneath them rather than trying to compensate for an unsuitable floor.

What about damp?

Garages can be more prone to moisture than rooms inside the house. If your concrete slab sweats or shows signs of moisture coming through, deal with that before installing the rubber.

A damp membrane may be appropriate where the slab has a moisture problem. The important point is not to simply cover a damp floor and hope the rubber will solve it.

Method 1: The Compression Method — No Glue

For most home and garage gym installations, the simplest approach is the compression method.

The tiles are loose laid without adhesive and the finished floor is brought together through careful positioning, a half-brick pattern and deliberate compression.

The technique works particularly well with recycled rubber because individual tiles can vary very slightly in size.

Rather than trying to force every tile to be exactly identical, the installation allows for that variation and uses slightly oversized perimeter pieces to create the final compression fit to lock the tiles in together.

The Essential Toolkit

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • Stanley knife with fixed blade — for controlled cutting through the rubber
  • Plenty of spare blades — rubber can blunt blades quickly
  • 1-metre ruler — for marking and guiding cuts
  • Chalk line — for creating your straight installation reference
  • Screw, nail or screw gun — for anchoring the chalk line when required
  • Ballpoint pen — for marking cutting lines on black rubber
  • Offcut mat or protective layer — to protect the floor underneath while cutting
  • Piece of timber — to flex the rubber open during deeper cuts

Take care around finished walls and furniture. Black rubber can leave marks if it is dragged or rubbed against surrounding surfaces.


Step 1: Ping Your Centre Line

Your first job is to establish a perfectly straight reference line.

Anchor one end of your chalk line with a screw or nail, pull it tightly across the floor and then lift and release the string to "ping" a crisp chalk line onto the subfloor.

This line becomes your starting point.

Don't simply use the wall as your guide.

Your room may look square, but even a small variation in the wall can become increasingly obvious as you work across the floor.

Planning the line

The position of your line depends on the dimensions of the room and the layout you're trying to achieve.

For example, in a room 230cm wide, positioning the reference line 65cm from the starting wall allows a full tile to sit down the centre of the room for a symmetrical finish.

The important point is to calculate your starting position rather than following the wall.


Step 2: Lay the First Row

Position your first row directly on your straight chalk line.

If you need to cut around a doorway, position the tile on the chalk line first — not against the door frame.

Mark the edges of the frame onto the tile with your ballpoint pen. Measure the required depth and transfer those measurements accurately.

Place your offcut mat underneath the tile before cutting and make sure you're cutting away from the usable section of the tile.

Once the first row is established, continue working along the room.


Step 3: Allow for Tile Variation

Recycled rubber is flexible and individual tiles may vary very slightly in size.

Rather than placing them flat, allow the edges to overlap temporarily and continue the row (as shown in the video).

The compression process later will bring the floor together.

This is an important part of the method: you're not trying to make the entire floor perfect one tile at a time.

You're building the floor in a way that allows the final compression to lock the tiles together.


Step 4: Cut the End of the Row Oversized

When you reach the opposite wall, measure the remaining gap.

Now comes one of the most important parts of the compression method.

Cut the final tile 5–10mm larger than the actual gap.

It may look too large when you first put it into position.

That's intentional.

Don't immediately trim it down.

The extra 5–10mm provides the material required to compress the floor later and close the joins.


Step 5: Create the Half-Brick Pattern

Begin the second row with approximately half a tile.

The objective is to stagger the joins between rows so they don't form continuous lines across the floor.

The joins in the second row should fall around the centre of the tiles in the first row.

If you're working around a doorway, the starting piece may need to be slightly under half-length to accommodate the existing notch.

Continue this half-brick pattern throughout the installation.

As you reach the walls, continue cutting the perimeter pieces 5–10mm oversized.


Step 6: Cut the Tiles 

Accurate cutting is essential for a professional finish.

Mark your cutting line clearly with a ballpoint pen and hold your 1-metre ruler firmly in position.

Score the rubber several times using your Stanley knife, gradually increasing the pressure with each pass.

As the cut gets deeper, the blade may begin to feel tight.

This is where the piece of timber comes in.

Place the timber underneath the tile, just to one side of the cut.

This flexes the rubber open, widening the cut and reducing friction on the blade.

You can then continue cutting through the remaining rubber much more easily.

Keep your hands away from the blade and replace it when it becomes blunt.


Step 7: Shunt the Tiles Into Position

Now it's time to complete the compression process.

Using the grip and sole of your foot, kick or shunt the tiles towards the joins and walls.

This is a controlled movement rather than an attempt to force the floor into position in one go.

The perimeter tiles were deliberately cut 5–10mm oversized.

As they are shunted into place, that additional material compresses the floor and pushes the joins together.

The result is a tight, flush and unified floor surface.

Work progressively around the room, allowing the tiles to move into their final positions.

This is what makes the compression method different from simply laying individual mats next to one another.

Finish the room with edging and corner sections.


Method 2: Adhesive Installation for Commercial Spaces

The alternative is to permanently bond selected tiles to the subfloor using an appropriate adhesive.

This method can be useful for larger commercial installations, where permanently fixing sections of the floor provides additional security and stability.

Importantly, this isn't simply a case of gluing every tile to the floor.

The installation still uses the same principles of accurate alignment, a half-brick pattern and controlled tension between fixed sections.

The Essential Toolkit

For an adhesive installation, you'll need:

  • Stanley hooked knife — for cutting rubber tiles
  • Spare blades — for maintaining clean, controlled cuts
  • 1-metre straight-edge ruler — for measuring and marking
  • Laser line or chalk line — for establishing the installation reference
  • Screw, nail or suitable fixing — for anchoring a chalk line where required
  • Ballpoint pen — for marking cutting lines

Always follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions, including preparation, application and curing requirements.


Step 1: Plan the Floor Layout

Start by drawing out the complete space.

Calculate the number of tiles required and decide exactly where your fixed rows will sit.

The width of the room determines how the adhesive installation needs to be approached:

Under 10 metres wide

You do not need to glue tiles to the subfloor.

The compression installation method is appropriate.

Wider than 10 metres

At least one central row of tiles must be permanently glued to the substrate.

Wider than 15 metres

Multiple rows must be permanently glued, spaced approximately 6–7 rows apart.

This creates fixed points within the larger installation while allowing the loose-laid sections between them to be compressed into position.


Step 2: Establish the First Row

Mark a perfectly straight laser or chalk line across the floor.

This is your alignment reference.

Lay the first row of complete tiles directly along this line.

For spaces under 10 metres wide, this becomes the central starting line from which you work outwards on both sides.

For spaces wider than 10 metres, this is the first permanently fixed row.

Use an authorised adhesive, such as an appropriate MS polymer or high-tack adhesive, and follow the instructions supplied with the adhesive.

Don't guess at adhesive application or curing requirements.

The adhesive manufacturer's instructions should always take priority.


Step 3: Build the Half-Brick Pattern

Once the first row is established, begin working into the adjacent rows.

Use the same half-brick pattern as the compression method.

Do not line the tiles up corner-to-corner in continuous rows.

The staggered joins create the intended layout and prevent all the joins from running in the same position.

Creating tension between glued rows

Where you have permanently fixed rows:

  1. Lay the loose rows between the fixed rows.
  2. When you reach the final loose row before the next fixed row, allow the tiles to overlap the required area by 5–10mm.
  3. Permanently fix the next row according to the adhesive manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Push the loose rows between the two fixed rows into position.

This creates slight tension between the permanent rows and helps close the seams.

Continue working through the room.

Install the complete, uncut tiles first.

Leave perimeter cutting until the main field of full tiles has been established.


Step 4: Cut and Fit the Perimeter

Once all the complete tiles are installed, measure the remaining gaps around the walls.

Use your straight-edge ruler to mark each cut accurately.

The hooked Stanley knife is used to cut the tiles to shape.

As with the compression installation, don't make the perimeter pieces too small.

Allow the cut pieces to overlap by 5–10mm so that they can be pressed firmly into the available space for a tight fit.

Work around the perimeter, cutting each section individually rather than assuming every wall is identical.


Step 5: Finish the Open Ends and Edges

Finish any open ends with the appropriate matching edge pieces.

These are supplied oversized, so measure the required length and trim them using the hooked knife.

For the most secure result, glue down all edge pieces using the appropriate adhesive.

In spaces under 10 metres wide, finishing open ends with edge pieces is optional.

Take care when fitting the edges so the transition from the rubber floor to the surrounding surface is neat and secure.

The extra 5–10mm is intentional. With the compression method, the oversized pieces can be shunted into position, compressing the floor and closing the joins. The adhesive method uses the overlap to create a tight fit between fixed sections and at the perimeter.
