Interlocking Foam Floor Mats & Tiles

Create a softer, safer and more comfortable floor space with our range of interlocking foam mats and EVA foam floor tiles. Designed for martial arts, kids’ play areas, yoga, stretching, floor work, light fitness and multi-purpose activity spaces, foam matting is a practical choice where comfort, cushioning and easy installation matter most.

Our foam floor mats are lightweight, simple to fit and available in a range of thicknesses, colours and reversible designs. Whether you are building a home training area, fitting out a dojo, creating a playroom or adding extra protection to a studio floor, foam tiles offer a cushioned surface that is kinder underfoot than hard flooring.

Unlike rubber gym flooring, foam matting is not designed for heavy free weights, loaded racks or commercial strength equipment. Its strength is comfort, shock absorption and floor-based movement. For weight training, cardio machines or heavy equipment zones, we would normally recommend rubber gym tiles instead.

Shop Square Foam Mat & Padded Floor Mat Options for Play, Sport & Fitness

Foam mats are ideal for spaces where people are training, stretching, playing, kneeling, rolling, sitting or moving directly on the floor. The soft EVA construction helps reduce impact on joints and creates a more forgiving surface than concrete, timber, laminate or vinyl.

They are a popular option for:

  • Martial arts and combat sports
  • Kids’ playrooms and play centres
  • Yoga, Pilates and stretching areas
  • Home fitness rooms
  • Light exercise spaces
  • Gymnastics and floor skills
  • Sensory rooms
  • Temporary activity areas
  • Multi-use studios

For areas where children play or users spend a lot of time on the floor, foam tiles provide a warmer, softer and more comfortable surface than hard floor finishes. For activity spaces, they also help create a defined training zone that can be installed quickly without specialist tools.

Interlocking Foam Mats

Interlocking foam mats are designed with puzzle-style edges that connect together to create a stable, joined-up surface. This makes them easy to install, expand, lift or reconfigure depending on the space.

They are especially useful when you want a floor that can be fitted without adhesive. In many home, studio and play settings, the tiles can be loose laid and edged neatly. For more permanent or high-use areas, adhesive may be used depending on the subfloor, layout and type of activity.

The interlocking design makes foam mats a good choice for awkward rooms, part-room coverage, pop-up training zones and spaces that may need to change over time. If you want a similar easy-fit format but need a tougher surface for heavier gym use, our interlocking floor mats collection may be more suitable.

Why Choose Foam Floor Tiles?

Foam floor tiles are not just about softness. They are designed to make floor-based movement safer, more comfortable and more practical.

The cushioned EVA foam helps absorb impact from light activity, falls, rolls and bodyweight movement. This makes foam matting particularly useful for martial arts training, children’s play, stretching, mobility work and low-impact exercise.

A tatami-style texture also helps improve grip underfoot. This is important in activities such as MMA, karate, taekwondo, judo, boxing drills and general floor work where users need traction without the surface feeling abrasive.

Foam tiles are also lightweight and easy to handle, so installation is straightforward. They can be fitted by most customers without specialist equipment, making them a simple option for home and commercial spaces alike.

What Thickness Foam Mat Do I Need?

Choosing the right foam mat thickness depends on how the space will be used.

Foam mat thickness Best for Typical spaces
13mm foam mats Basic cushioning, colourful play areas and light use Kids’ playrooms, nurseries, temporary play zones
20mm foam mats General comfort, light fitness, yoga, stretching and play Home exercise areas, playrooms, wellness spaces
40mm foam mats Greater impact protection for martial arts and floor-based training MMA, BJJ, judo, karate, taekwondo, boxing gyms and dojos

For general home use, 20mm foam mats are a strong all-round choice. They offer a good level of comfort without feeling too bulky and are easy to install in spare rooms, playrooms and light fitness areas.

For martial arts, grappling, throws or more regular floor impact, 40mm foam mats are usually the better option. The extra depth gives more cushioning and protection for combat sports and high-contact training.

For colourful kids’ play areas where the main priority is a softer floor for sitting, crawling and general play, 13mm foam play mats may be enough.

Foam Mats for Martial Arts and Combat Sports

Foam is one of the most popular flooring choices for martial arts because it gives the right combination of cushioning, grip and comfort. The tatami surface supports footwork and controlled movement, while the EVA core helps absorb impact during floor contact.

Our foam matting range includes options for martial arts mats, MMA, BJJ, judo, karate, taekwondo, boxing and dojo spaces. For striking, stance work, stretching and general drills, 20mm mats may be suitable. For grappling, groundwork, throws and higher-impact training, 40mm mats are generally the better choice.

Foam mats are also reversible on selected products, giving you the option to create zones, colour patterns or a fresh look by flipping the tiles over. This is useful for clubs, studios and home dojos that want a smart, practical training area without a permanent sports floor installation.

Foam Mats for Kids’ Play Areas

Foam mats are a practical choice for children’s play areas because they help create a softer, warmer and more forgiving surface. They are often used in playrooms, nurseries, home activity spaces, sensory rooms and kids’ fitness areas.

The tiles help cushion trips, tumbles and floor-based play, while the bright colour options can make a room feel more inviting. They are also easier to install than many fixed flooring systems and can be lifted or replaced in sections if needed.

For playrooms, 13mm or 20mm foam mats are usually suitable depending on the level of cushioning required. For more active play, gymnastics-style movement or multi-use spaces, a thicker option may be preferred.

Foam Mats for Yoga, Stretching and Light Fitness

Foam floor tiles work well in areas where the main activities are low impact and floor based. This includes stretching, yoga, Pilates, mobility work, bodyweight movement and general exercise.

Compared with a hard floor, foam creates a more comfortable surface for knees, wrists, elbows and backs. It also makes the room feel warmer and more usable, especially in spare rooms, garages, studios or multi-use spaces.

Foam mats are not the best surface for heavy dumbbell drops, loaded barbells or large gym machines. If your space includes weight training, racks, benches or cardio equipment, consider using foam for the stretching or floor work zone and home gym flooring or rubber tiles for the heavier training area.

Are Foam Mats Suitable for Home Gyms?

Foam mats can be suitable for some home gym spaces, but only when the activity is light to moderate.

They are a good option for:

  • Yoga
  • Stretching
  • Mobility
  • Bodyweight training
  • Core work
  • Kids’ fitness
  • Floor exercises
  • Light martial arts practice

They are not the best option for:

  • Deadlifts
  • Heavy dumbbell work
  • Squat racks
  • Treadmills
  • Exercise bikes
  • Heavy benches
  • Multi-gyms
  • Dropped weights

Heavy equipment can leave dents in foam, and dropped weights can damage the tile surface. For strength training, a rubber surface will usually perform better. If your home gym includes both heavy equipment and floor work, a mixed layout can work well: rubber tiles under the gym kit and foam mats in the stretching, martial arts or mobility area.

Foam Mats vs Rubber Mats

Foam and rubber mats are often compared, but they are designed for different jobs.

Foam mats are softer, lighter and more comfortable for body contact. They are ideal for play, martial arts, stretching and floor-based movement.

Rubber mats are denser, heavier and better suited to strength training, cardio equipment, free weights and commercial gym use. They offer stronger resistance to heavy loads and better protection against equipment damage.

Type Best for Not ideal for
Foam mats Play, martial arts, yoga, stretching, floor work Heavy weights, machines, dropped equipment
Rubber mats Gym equipment, free weights, functional training, heavy use Soft play, grappling, some Martial Arts

If the space is mainly for comfort and cushioning, choose foam. If the space needs to handle weight, machines or repeated heavy impact, choose rubber.

Can Foam Mats Be Used Outdoors?

Foam mats are best used indoors or in covered, dry areas. They are not designed for long-term outdoor exposure, heavy rain, standing water, UV exposure or harsh weather.

For patios, outdoor gyms, balconies or uncovered garden areas, we would recommend outdoor rubber flooring tiles instead. Rubber is more suitable for outdoor conditions and better suited to moisture, temperature changes and heavier use.

Foam mats may be used temporarily in sheltered spaces, but they should not be left exposed outside as a permanent floor.

Installation and Maintenance

Foam mats are designed to be easy to install. The puzzle edges connect together by hand, and many tiles include removable border strips to create a neater finish around the edge of the area.

Before fitting, make sure the subfloor is clean, dry and level. Foam tiles can be installed over many hard surfaces including timber, concrete and existing indoor flooring, provided the surface is stable and free from sharp debris.

To clean foam mats, remove loose dirt with a vacuum or soft brush, then wipe the surface with a damp cloth or mild cleaning solution. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads or soaking the tiles. For hygiene, especially in martial arts or children’s spaces, regular cleaning is recommended.

If a tile becomes worn or damaged, individual sections can usually be lifted and replaced without removing the whole floor.

Foam mats are best used for activities where comfort, cushioning and floor contact are important. This includes martial arts, kids’ play, yoga, Pilates, stretching, bodyweight exercise, gymnastics-style movement and light fitness.

Are foam mats good for heavy gym equipment?

Foam mats are not the best choice for heavy gym equipment. Loaded machines, benches, racks and heavy free weights can compress or mark the foam. For heavy gym use, we recommend rubber gym flooring instead.

What thickness foam mat should I choose?

Choose 13mm foam mats for light play and basic cushioning, 20mm mats for general home fitness, yoga and play areas, and 40mm mats for martial arts, grappling, throws and higher-impact floor work.

Are foam mats suitable for martial arts?

Yes. Foam mats are widely used for martial arts because they provide cushioning, grip and a comfortable training surface. For more impact-heavy activities such as judo, BJJ, MMA and takedown training, 40mm foam mats are usually the better option.

Can foam mats be used in a playroom?

Yes. Foam mats are a popular option for playrooms because they create a softer and warmer surface for children. They are easy to install, available in bright colours and can be replaced in sections if damaged.

Can foam mats be used outside?

Foam mats are not recommended for permanent outdoor use. They are best suited to indoor or covered spaces. For exposed patios, outdoor gyms or garden areas, outdoor rubber tiles are a better option.

Are foam mats easy to clean?

Yes. Foam mats are low maintenance and can usually be cleaned with a vacuum, soft brush, damp cloth or mild cleaning solution. Avoid harsh chemicals and do not soak the tiles.

Do foam mats interlock?

FAQ - Foam Mats

Can you use sponge floor mats outside?

We would not recommend using foam matting in an external space which is not covered. Although foam is durable and hardwearing, it is not designed for outdoor conditions.  We would recommend our Outdoor Rubber Mats for external use.

What colour of foam mats do you offer?

We supply dual reversible tile options in red/blue and grey/black as well as single colour tiles in Blue, Red, Orange, Green and Black

What is the warranty on your foam tiles?

We offer a 4 year warranty.

Can foam mats withstand heavy gym equipment?

While our foam floor mats are designed to provide excellent cushioning and protection against falls or accidents, they may not offer optimal support for heavy gym equipment. For such requirements, we recommend our specially designed rubber mats which can bear heavy loads without any deformation or damage.

How to clean and maintain foam floor tiles?

To clean foam tiles, first remove any loose debris with a vacuum cleaner. For stubborn stains, you can use a damp washcloth or mild soap solutions. However, avoid harsh chemicals which may damage the material. Regularly inspect the tiles for wear and tear, and replace any damaged sections to maintain overall safety and durability.

Are the foam mats interlock-able?

Yes, our foam mats are designed with interlocking edges. This allows for easy assembly and disassembly, and you can configure them in any style according to your space. Additionally, the interlocking design ensures the mats stay firmly in place during your workouts, minimizing the risk of slippage or accidents.
