Over the twelve months to 31 August 2026, Sprung Gym Flooring shipped more than 4,600 tatami, judo, taekwondo and MMA mats across 240 UK orders — around £86,000 of matting — and the shipping labels draw a surprisingly clear map.

London's 312 mats came from 18 separate orders — a spread of home training corners, garage dojos and small clubs. The Scottish story is different: Paisley, Bathgate, Denny, Dundee, Castle Douglas and Johnstone all make the top 20 on one or two orders each, which is the signature of clubs and community halls matting whole training areas in one go. The club-restart season
Martial arts matting is the most seasonal product we sell. Of the 4,635 mats shipped in the year, 3,222 — 69.5% — went out between September and January, as clubs re-open after summer, class registers refill and community halls re-mat for the new term. October alone accounted for 785 mats, the biggest month of the year, while August, the quietest, managed just 84. If you run a club and your mats are tired, this is precisely the moment the rest of the country replaces theirs.
What Britain trains on
Two quiet shifts show up in the product mix. The first is colour: the classic red-and-blue reversible tatami — the look of every school-hall judo class for decades — now accounts for just 19% of mats shipped, while grey-and-black takes 79%. Britain's dojos increasingly look like its home gyms. The second is thickness: 20mm jigsaw-style mats (the striking, karate and general fitness standard) make up half of all mats shipped, 40mm judo-depth mats — the safe landing for throws and groundwork — hold a solid 40%, and the 26mm middle ground takes the rest.
Search interest tells the same story from the demand side: UK searches across the martial arts matting cluster — "jigsaw mats" (700 monthly searches), "tatami mats" (400), "MMA mats" (400), "judo mats" (350), "martial arts mats" (200), "taekwondo mats" (150) and "dojo mats" (70) — add up to roughly 2,270 searches a month (Ahrefs, September 2026).

On raw volume London wins, but mat-for-mat the real strongholds are Scottish towns like Paisley, Bathgate and Denny, where one club order can out-mat a whole London borough."
